Dogs

All dogs within the Halifax Regional Municipality must be licensed. (CLICK HERE to download the New Dog Registration form.) Identification tags must be visible and worn at all times. As clearly outlined in By-law D-100, you are responsible for the actions of your dog(s) at all times. You are guilty of an offence if your dog, at any time:

  • Runs at large.

  • Attacks or injures a person or animal.
  • Is deemed fierce or dangerous to people or animals, pursuant to section 2(e) of the By-law (if so deemed, the dog(s) must be muzzled or otherwise restrained when on public or private property other than the owner's).
  • Persistently disturbs the quiet of a neighborhood by barking, howling or in any other manner.
  • Damages public or private property without provocation.

Look for the signs!

Dogs allowed off-leash: The sign to the right designates areas where you dog can be off-leash. Dogs must be kept under total control by the dog owner at all times.

Dogs are allowed off-leash on your own private property. Dogs are allowed off-leash (but must be under complete control at all times) if:

  • The dog is participating in an organized hunt, dog exhibition event or field trials.

  • The dog is part of a Search and Rescue or police operation.
  • The dog is working on a farm.

Within a municipal park, dogs are allowed off-leash:

  • Where the area is designated by signage as an area where dogs are permitted to be off-leash subject to posted limitations.

  • On a sport or athletic field, between November 1 and May 1 between 6 am and 10 am only, unless otherwise posted or in use.

Dogs allowed on-leash: In many areas, dogs are allowed but must be leashed and under effective control at all times. Look for the sign on the right.

A process of public consultation through Community Council meetings and Public Hearing will determine municipal parks in each district that will be designated as "off-leash" areas.

For more information on this public consultation process, please contact your Municipal Councilor.

No dogs allowed: Dogs are not allowed at any time (either on a leash or off):

  • In municipal parks displaying this sign.

  • On school property.
  • In playgrounds.
  • At beaches.
  • And in other areas that display this sign.

For more information on dogs and the law, visit the Pitter Patter Paws section of the Halifax Regional Municipality website or call 490-4000.
