Mooseheads History

It's hard to
believe that it has been ten years since the Halifax Mooseheads first
hit the ice of the Halifax Metro Centre in quest of the prestigious
Memorial Cup. Since the teams inception in 1994, the Herd has quickly
become a hotspot in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, due
largely in part of the thousands of outrageous fans that pack the
Metro Centre each game, or as they are affectionately known ... Moosemaniacs.
Local
businessman Harold MacKay envisioned Halifax as a prime city for
junior hockey. As the Vice-President of Sales for Moosehead Breweries
at the time, Mr. MacKay presented Moosehead brass with the idea of a
Major Junior team in Halifax. He was given the green light to find
investors to own the remaining 40% of the team. This was no problem
as eight separate businessmen jumped at the opportunity and the
Halifax Mooseheads were born. Although there were unsuccessful
attempts of professional hockey by the Nova Scotia Oilers and Halifax
Citadels, Mr. MacKay thought the fans would embrace the idea of
younger men playing with pride and determination to fulfill a dream
of one day lacing up their skates in the NHL. This in turn became our
team motto:
"Heart.
Pride. Determination. The Mooseheads Way." |
